Onanon has proven its commitment to innovation time and time again, this time by manufacturing a magnetic connector with fiber optics . There are countless custom products that Onanon has created over the decades. In July 2024, Onanon engineers attended an annual Amphenol conference, Technology Interexchange Meeting (TIM), for Amphenol Engineering Mangers and Director of Engineers. It is a place to collaborate best practices between connector experts and share emerging technologies and success stories.  

Each Amphenol division under Amphenol Industrial Product’s Group presents a product they believe is the “Best Innovation for 2024”. Onanon was awarded second place for a latching magnetic connector that uses fiber optics within it. 

Magnetic Cable Assemblies 

This technology was designed and manufactured by one of our engineers who recently solved a client’s problem by creating a now patented connector.  Onanon has succeeded in creating many variations of magnetic connector assemblies. 

The client needed a connector for a heart valve, something that could rapidly and securely transmit data safely. Our engineer used a latching magnetic connector and integrated fiber optics and electrical connections into it to increase signal integrity.  

They combined technology to create a groundbreaking connector that had never been created before. By combining fiber optic and electrical connectivity into a single, streamlined unit, we have a new standard for connectivity applications. 

Magnetic Connector Benefits:  

• Hybrid Housing Devices: The female and male housings are equipped with metallic and magnetic elements for a secure, self-mating connection. The female housing contains a metallic ring that interacts with a magnet in the male housing, ensuring a reliable and safe connection. 

• Enhanced Signal Integrity: The fiber optic components are meticulously configured to align perfectly, maintaining optimal data transmission and signal quality. Springs within the connector ensure consistent pressure and connection integrity. 

• Versatile and Customizable: Our design allows for various configurations, enabling adjustments to the number and layout of electrical and fiber optic contacts to meet specific requirements and applications. Configurable printed circuit boards (PCBs) and anti-reflective coatings also enhance customization options. 

Connecting Male and Female Connectors: 

 The connector utilizes both male and female connectors. It mounts a female connector on a network panel using a locking ring to secure it in place. Then it attached the male connector to a hybrid cable that includes both electrical wires and fiber optic cables.

Within the connectors, electrical contacts come into alignment. In this example, the female connector has gold-plated copper pins that connect with corresponding contacts in the male connector, establishing a robust electrical connection. 

Fiber Optic Alignment:  

Simultaneously, the fiber optic components align. The female connector’s ceramic ferrules, guided by springs to maintain pressure, align with the male connector’s ferrules. This alignment ensures a stable and high-quality optical connection, vital for data transmission. The spring ensures that the connector maintains stability and constant pressure. 

With our new patented connector, we can work with even more medical equipment manufacturers to create products that are even more impressive.
