Did You Know? MagConnect® for Industrial Applications

By Dennis Johnson,
General Manager & Chief Technology Officer, Onanon

Industrial equipment does not operate in clean, controlled environments. It vibrates, moves, gets pulled, and is handled by operators who need things to work quickly and reliably. In those conditions, connector design directly affects uptime, safety, and long-term durability.

That is where Onanon MagConnect® stands out.Items Archive – Onanon

In a recent Did You Know video, Dennis Johnson, General Manager and CTO at Onanon, explained why MagConnect is well suited for a wide range of industrial applications and why its use cases continue to grow.

The Problem With Traditional Industrial Connectors

Many industrial connectors rely on mechanical latches, threaded couplings, or precise pin alignment. Over time, these features wear down due to shock, vibration, and repeated mating cycles. Misalignment and latch damage are common causes of connector failure, especially in mobile and battery-powered systems.

When connectors fail, equipment downtime follows. In industries where reliability matters, that risk adds up quickly.

Magnetic Safety Latching That Simplifies Connection

MagConnect eliminates mechanical locking in favor of a magnetic safety latch. The connector self-aligns and seats naturally, without twisting or force. Once connected, users know it is fully engaged.

If a cable is pulled accidentally, MagConnect decouples cleanly instead of transferring stress to the connector or device. This reduces damage in applications where movement is constant and cables are frequently under load.

Designed for Shock, Vibration, and Motion

Without a rigid locking mechanism, MagConnect performs exceptionally well in shock and vibration environments. Preliminary testing shows strong performance compared to traditional latching connectors, making it a solid choice for mobile and outdoor equipment.

Typical industrial use cases include electric vehicles, golf carts, drones, e-bikes, scooters, UTVs, electric mowers, and robotic systems. In these applications, fast connection and safe disconnect are essential.

Power, Data, and Scalable Designs

MagConnect currently supports power ranges from 3 amps to 30 amps, with higher-current versions from 50 amps to 500 amps in development. Configurations are available for power-only, power and data, or power combined with fiber optics, allowing flexibility across product platforms.

This scalability helps OEMs standardize on a single intuitive connector while supporting different electrical requirements.

A Connector Designed for Industrial Reality

MagConnect is built for engineers designing equipment that moves, vibrates, and operates in demanding conditions. Its intuitive shape, magnetic alignment, and decoupling safety reduce common failure points and simplify operation in the field.

Onanon works directly with OEMs to integrate MagConnect into industrial systems at every stage of development. If you are designing a new platform or updating an existing one, our engineers are ready to help.
